Special tour of the Bocage (hedegrow) Countryside
Introduction
Most of the roads we travel behind the Beaches were much narrower and deeper in 1944, particularly in the many sunken lanes which connected the field systems and through which the heavily motorised Allied advance were quickly and easily rebuffed. Typically the roads were narrow and abutted by high dirt embankments surmounted by a dense screen of trees and bushes. Since the French discovered the chainsaw and with modern day farming practices, many of these Bocage lanes have been swept aside. But some still remain – and expect to be surprised!
